Niseko Powder Guiding

Grand Hirafu, Hanazono, Niseko Village and Annupuri on one all-mountain pass; Plume Ridge coaches are based here all season.

Guiding isn't a lesson. It's a guide who knows the terrain taking you to the safest, best snow of the day, in powder and trees. Now booking for 2026/27: full days from ¥145,000 per group (same price for 1–4 people), with pick-up from your Niseko accommodation.

How is guiding different from a lesson?

A private lesson is about technique: your coach breaks down each movement so you improve step by step. Guiding is about terrain and safety decisions: your guide picks the route from the day's snow, weather and avalanche information and takes you where the riding is best for your level. To build powder and tree technique, start with our lessons; if you're experienced and want the best snow, choose guiding.

What's included

IncludedA full day with your guide; pick-up and drop-off at your Niseko accommodation, and transport to and from Rusutsu or Kiroro.
Not includedLift tickets (at resorts other than Niseko United you also cover your guide's lift ticket); avalanche gear rental; skins, splitboards or snowshoes for touring days (confirm when you get your quote); ski or snowboard equipment; insurance.

How the gates and routes work

Niseko United and Moiwa have 11 official backcountry gates, opened and closed by ski patrol according to avalanche risk. When a gate is closed, going out of bounds is not allowed, and ducking ropes is never allowed. If the gates are closed or the weather is unsettled, your guide takes you through in-bounds trees and ungroomed terrain instead.

Who can join

  • Skiers: continuous parallel turns on intermediate runs or harder. Snowboarders: continuous linked turns on intermediate runs or harder.
  • Some experience in ungroomed snow, powder or trees; if it's your first time in powder, we recommend a lesson first.
  • Fitness for a full day of riding; touring days and Mt Yotei need a higher level of fitness.
  • Under-18s need a parent's consent and must be accompanied by an adult; under the Niseko Rules, elementary school children may not enter backcountry areas unless accompanied by an elder companion.
  • Your guide assesses your level before heading out and will stay in-bounds if going out isn't suitable. Follow your guide's instructions at all times.

Avalanche gear and insurance

GearA helmet, avalanche beacon, probe and shovel are required on every out-of-bounds and backcountry day; terrain just outside the resort counts as backcountry too. The Niseko Rules also require a helmet and beacon in backcountry areas. If you don't have gear, you can rent a full set: ¥6,500 for the first day and ¥5,000 for each extra day.
InsuranceYou must have valid travel insurance that covers skiing (including off-piste), medical costs for injuries, and personal liability if your negligence injures someone else. Niseko United states that search and rescue in backcountry areas costs a minimum of ¥100,000.

Booking and payment

  1. WhatsApp your consultant your date, group size, level and preferred route.
  2. Once your guide and route are confirmed, pay a 20% deposit to secure the booking.
  3. The balance is due 14 days before your day; for days between 15 Dec – 5 Jan and 15 Jan – 28 Feb, it's due 30 days before.

Avalanche risk or weatherYour guide may change or cancel the day for safety reasons such as avalanche risk or weather, and will first offer an in-bounds route or another alternative. If there's no alternative, you receive a credit voucher for the time remaining (valid for two years, transferable, subject to availability); there are no cash refunds.
Ending the dayIf a guest doesn't follow the guide's instructions or behaves dangerously, the guide may end the day immediately without a refund.

Risks

  • Backcountry and ungroomed terrain carry inherent risks, including avalanches, tree wells, cliffs, creeks and fast-changing weather. A guide reduces these risks but can't remove them.
  • Routes depend on the day's snow, weather and avalanche information, and no particular spot is guaranteed. Niseko's avalanche information is updated every morning (niseko.nadare.info).
  • Please tell us your level and any health issues honestly; your guide may shorten or change the day if conditions aren't safe.

Combine it with

  • A lesson plus guiding: build powder technique with a private lesson one day, then head out with a guide the next.
  • Concierge: dinners, onsen and accommodation arranged in one go — see Niseko concierge.
  • Chinese-language support: Plume Ridge consultants look after you in Mandarin, Cantonese or English and walk you through the plan before the day.

Frequently asked questions

Is the price per person or per group?

Per group for a full day, the same for 1–4 people; groups of 5–7 add a tail guide for ¥90,000.

What's the difference between lift-accessed and touring days?

Lift-accessed days use the lifts, then head out through the official gates or into in-bounds trees. Touring days and Mt Yotei use no lifts: you climb with skins, a splitboard or snowshoes, which takes more fitness but reaches places the lifts can't.

What if the gates are closed?

Ski patrol opens and closes the gates according to avalanche risk, and nobody may go out while they're closed. Your guide will take you through in-bounds trees and ungroomed terrain instead.

I don't have avalanche gear. Can I still join?

Yes — rent a full set of beacon, probe and shovel for ¥6,500 on the first day and ¥5,000 for each extra day. A helmet is also required.

Can snowboarders join?

Yes, both snowboarders and skiers. Your consultant will ask about your experience before planning the route.
