Why Chile

When every other ski resort is closed, the Andes are at their best

From June to October, the high peaks of central Chile — 3,000 metres and above — are in full winter. The main resorts sit just 1.5 to 3 hours from Santiago, entirely above the treeline, with the wide-open terrain national teams choose for summer training. Plume Ridge designs every trip from scratch: group size, dates, resorts, hotels and coaching are all built around you.

Jun – OctThe opposite of the northern season; mid-July to early September is prime, with August the most reliable for powder
1.5 – 3 hDrive time from Santiago to the main resorts — coffee in the city, first lift by noon
3,000 m+Base elevation at Valle Nevado; vast open bowls and off-piste above the treeline
450 guestsPortillo's weekly maximum, with a staff-to-guest ratio of about 1 : 1
1,500 mVertical on a single Andes heli-ski run — among the longest anywhere in the world (optional)

Valle Nevado — Chile's most modern resort

  • 46 km from Santiago · about 1.5 h
  • Base 3,000 m · lifts to about 3,670 m
  • Linked with La Parva and El Colorado

The heart of Tres Valles, South America's largest interconnected ski area. The ski-in / ski-out Hotel Valle Nevado has only 50 rooms, a spa and several restaurants; the ski school teaches in English, and heli-skiing departs from here. Ideal for a first trip to Chile and for anyone who wants to sleep beside the piste.

Portillo — the legend of South American skiing

  • Opened 1949 · the continent's oldest resort
  • Host of the 1966 Alpine World Championships
  • Hotel Portillo at 2,880 m

The yellow Hotel Portillo sits on the shore of Laguna del Inca and is the only hotel on the mountain — never more than 450 guests a week. Ski Weeks run Saturday to Saturday and include four meals a day and lift access. Ideal for a fully immersive week away from everything, and for families. About 160 km from Santiago, 2–3 hours by car.

La Parva & El Colorado — expert lines and family ease

  • Linked with Valle Nevado
  • La Chimenea couloir
  • Lodging in Farellones village

La Parva offers wide freeride terrain and the famous La Chimenea couloir for advanced and expert skiers; El Colorado, one of Chile's largest resorts, sits beside Farellones village with the widest choice of lodging and the best après-ski — a natural fit for families and groups of friends.

Nevados de Chillán — volcano, trees and hot springs

  • Southern Chile · beneath an active volcano
  • One of the few Chilean resorts with tree skiing
  • A longer season than the central resorts

Ski beneath a smoking volcano, with natural hot springs and a spa at the base; August brings the best powder. For guests who already know the central resorts and want wilder terrain and a longer season — easily combined with the Santiago resorts into a complete 12–14 day Chilean winter.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa?

Most passports — including Hong Kong SAR, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, the United States, the United Kingdom, EU countries and Australia — enter Chile visa-free for up to 90 days. Holders of a PRC passport with a valid US or Canadian visa (more than six months' validity) also enter visa-free; otherwise a Chilean visa is required in advance. Requirements change, so we confirm them for your passport before you book.

How do I get there?

Santiago (SCL) has nonstop flights from major hubs in the United States and Europe. From Asia, allow roughly 22 – 26 hours with one stop, via Sydney, Melbourne or Auckland, or via Dallas or Los Angeles. We recommend a first night in Santiago before heading up the mountain.

Will the altitude be a problem?

The hotels at Valle Nevado sit at about 3,000 m and Hotel Portillo at 2,880 m. Most guests adjust with an easy first day and plenty of water; we deliberately keep your first ski day short.

Can beginners join?

Yes. Coaching is what Plume Ridge does — from first turns to advanced technique — and different levels within one family can be taught separately at the same resort, at the same time.

Which month is best?

August for powder; early September for sunshine, spring snow and fewer people. July is the South American school holiday, so the resorts are busier and prices higher.
